Outspoken vs openWakeWord
Short answer: Outspoken runs the same openWakeWord training pipeline — TTS sample generation, noise augmentation, GPU training, ONNX export — behind a web UI, so you get the same model format without setting up Python, a GPU, and ~4GB of training data yourself.
Quick comparison
| Outspoken | openWakeWord (self-hosted) | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | None — web UI | Python environment, ~4GB training data download |
| Compute | Hosted GPU, ~45 min | Your own GPU (or slow CPU training) |
| Model format | ONNX | ONNX |
| Cost | One-time credits, first model free | Free, but you provide compute and time |
| Control | Training parameters exposed in UI | Full pipeline access, every hyperparameter |
| Debugging | Guided training flow | You debug phonetics/data/hyperparameters yourself |
Same models, different setup cost
openWakeWord is the open-source engine Outspoken is built on — this isn't a from-scratch competitor, it's the same training pipeline. The models are interchangeable; both are standard ONNX files that run anywhere ONNX Runtime does, including Home Assistant's Wyoming-based wake word detection.
The difference is entirely in who runs the pipeline. openWakeWord direct requires installing dependencies, downloading the shared training data, generating synthetic speech with Piper TTS, running augmentation, and executing training with correct hyperparameters — a few hours of setup if you have ML experience, longer if you don't. Outspoken runs that exact pipeline on hosted GPUs and exposes the parameters that matter through a form.
When to use openWakeWord directly
If you want full control over every pipeline internal, you're already comfortable with Python and GPU training, or you're modifying the pipeline itself (new augmentation techniques, custom data sources), clone the repo and run it yourself. See the training data deep-dive for what the pipeline actually does.
When to use Outspoken
If you just want a trained ONNX model without managing a Python environment, a GPU, and a multi-gigabyte data download, Outspoken gets you there in about 45 minutes through a browser.
